Headings, lists and links are mapped to Markdown syntax
- Moving technical documentation from Word into a GitHub README or docs site
- Converting meeting notes written in Word into Markdown for a note-taking app like Obsidian
- Preparing content for a Markdown-based static site generator such as Jekyll or Hugo
- Archiving a Word document as lightweight, version-control-friendly plain text
How Word structure maps onto Markdown, and where the mapping runs out
The conversion works from Word's semantic styles, not from appearance. A paragraph styled "Heading 2" becomes a level-two heading; a paragraph that merely looks like a heading because someone made it large and bold becomes an ordinary paragraph with bold text. That distinction decides the quality of the output entirely, and it is worth checking in the source document before converting: applying real heading styles in Word takes a moment and produces a clean document structure rather than a flat wall of emphasised text.
Most inline formatting maps cleanly. Bold, italic, inline code, hyperlinks, bulleted and numbered lists and blockquotes all have direct Markdown equivalents and survive the conversion intact. Simple tables convert to Markdown table syntax. What has no equivalent is anything positional or decorative: text colour, font choice, alignment, page breaks, columns, text boxes and footnotes. Markdown deliberately has no way to express those, which is the reason to use it and the reason some things do not arrive.
Two areas reliably need a manual pass. Merged table cells cannot be represented in Markdown table syntax at all, so a table using them will need restructuring or converting to HTML. And images are extracted as references rather than embedded, since Markdown links to image files rather than carrying them, so the files have to be saved alongside the document and the paths corrected. If the destination is GitHub, a static site generator or an app like Obsidian, running the output through a Markdown linter afterwards will catch the remaining flavour differences quickly.
Free and private. Everything runs on your own device, with no account and no uploads.
This converter turns a Word document into clean Markdown, which is ideal if you are moving documentation from Word into a README, static site generator, or note-taking app that speaks Markdown. Headings become # syntax, bold and italic text keep their emphasis markers, and lists are reformatted with proper dashes or numbers. All parsing happens client-side, so the document never leaves your device.
Simple tables are converted to Markdown table syntax; very complex or merged-cell tables may need manual touch-up.
Hyperlinks, bold, italic, and list formatting are mapped to their standard Markdown equivalents.
It outputs widely compatible standard Markdown that works in most static site generators, GitHub, and note apps.
Yes, the output is plain text, so you can copy it into any text editor and adjust it before publishing.
