When to use this
  • Printing a public-domain book or a DRM-free publisher download
  • Reading an EPUB on a device that only opens PDF
  • Extracting plain text from a book for search, analysis or accessibility tools
  • Checking how your own self-published EPUB reads as a continuous document

Reflowable text becomes fixed pages

An EPUB does not have pages. It is a ZIP of XHTML chapters that an e-reader reflows to fit whatever screen and font size you choose, which is why the same book shows a different page count on a phone and on a tablet. A PDF is the opposite: every line sits at a fixed position on a fixed page. Converting means choosing a page size and laying the text out once. This converter uses 6 × 9 inches, a common paperback trim size, with the book's title and author on the first page and each chapter following in reading order.

Structure is carried across: headings, paragraphs, bold and italic. Visual styling from the e-book's own stylesheet is not, because it was written for reflowing screens rather than fixed pages. The result reads like a plainly typeset book, which suits printing, annotating on a tablet or sending to someone without an e-reader.

Two limits come from the source rather than the converter. Books bought from a store are usually protected with DRM, which encrypts the text, and this tool cannot and will not remove that protection. DRM-free EPUBs, such as those from Project Gutenberg or your own exported manuscripts, convert normally. And the PDF uses standard Latin fonts, so a book mostly in Hindi, Arabic or Chinese is refused with an explanation instead of being printed as question marks.

Free and private. Everything runs on your own device, with no account and no uploads.

EPUB is the standard e-book format: a bundle of web pages that reflows to fit any screen. That flexibility is also its limit: it does not print, many devices and apps do not open it, and it is awkward to annotate or quote. This converter reads a DRM-free EPUB in your browser and produces a paginated PDF in book proportions, a plain text file, or a single self-contained HTML page with the images included.

Books bought from Kindle, Apple Books, Kobo or Google Play are usually encrypted so that only their apps can read them. Their text cannot be converted by any honest tool. DRM-free EPUBs convert normally.

The PDF keeps the text, headings and lists, but not images. Choose HTML output for a version that includes every picture.

The PDF uses standard built-in fonts that cover Western European text only. For other scripts, convert to HTML and use your browser's Print → Save as PDF, which uses your system fonts.

E-books have no fixed layout, so the PDF uses its own clean book layout: headings, paragraphs and lists on a 6 × 9 inch page.
