Browsers can read more formats than they can write, so some formats appear only as inputs.
Most online converters work by uploading your file to a server, converting it there and sending it back, which is why they have queues, size tiers and privacy policies about deleting your files later. The converters here work the other way round: the browser already contains decoders for most image, audio and video formats, and the missing pieces (a HEIC decoder, an MP3 encoder, a Photoshop reader, a WOFF2 compressor, an archive library) are loaded into the page, and video is encoded by your device's own hardware through WebCodecs. The file is converted in memory and saved straight back to your disk, which also means there is no daily limit and nothing to wait for.
Converting a JPG to PNG or an MP3 to WAV makes the file larger but not better: the detail the lossy format discarded is gone. Those conversions are for compatibility and editing. When the goal is a smaller file, go the other way: PNG to JPG or WebP, WAV to MP3.
WebP to JPG, M4A to MP3 and HEIC to JPG all decode one lossy format and encode another. Keep the quality or bitrate at or above the source and the loss is invisible, but avoid converting the same file back and forth: each round adds a generation of artefacts.
PNG, WebP, GIF and ICO store transparency; JPG, BMP and PDF pages do not. When converting a cut-out or logo into one of those, pick the background colour yourself rather than letting it default, or choose PNG or WebP to keep the see-through areas.
Browsers decode AVIF and FLAC but cannot encode them, and RAR and 7z can be unpacked but not reliably written, so those formats appear here as inputs only. A few outputs depend on the browser: M4A needs an AAC encoder, which Chrome on Linux and Firefox lack. A local converter can only honestly offer what it can produce on your device.
