PNG screenshots, illustrations and UI graphics are frequently the heaviest assets on a web page, and WebP can shrink them dramatically while keeping transparency: something JPG cannot do. A transparent PNG logo or a product cut-out converts to a WebP that is still see-through but often a fraction of the size. That makes WebP the natural web replacement for PNG in a way JPG never was.
Yes. WebP supports a full alpha channel, including semi-transparent edges and shadows, so a transparent PNG stays transparent.
Photographic PNGs often shrink by 80–90%. Screenshots and graphics usually shrink by 50–80%. A tiny PNG that is already highly optimised may barely change.
At quality 90 and above, yes. Lower settings can soften fine text and one-pixel lines, which is more noticeable in UI screenshots than in photos.
JPG removes transparency and smears sharp edges. WebP keeps transparency and handles graphics better, while still being much smaller than PNG.
Only the first frame is converted; animation is not carried over.
- 1
Add PNG images
Drop screenshots, graphics or transparent cut-outs. JPG, GIF and BMP work too.
- 2
Pick a quality
For graphics with text and sharp edges, stay at 90 or higher to keep them crisp.
- 3
Resize if needed
Set the width the image is displayed at to avoid shipping unnecessary pixels.
- 4
Convert and download
Save the WebP, or a ZIP of the whole batch.
- ·Compare the output size: for tiny icons, an optimised PNG or SVG can beat WebP
- ·Keep PNG originals for editing; treat the WebP as the published copy
- ·Use 90+ quality for anything containing text
