TIFF is the format of scanners, fax software, medical imaging and professional photography: lossless, flexible and enormous. A single scanned page can be 20–50 MB as TIFF, and browsers, phones and most websites cannot display it at all. Converting to JPG shrinks it to something you can email or upload; PNG keeps it lossless in a format everything opens; and PDF wraps the image as a document page for forms that want a PDF.
The largest image in the file is converted, which is the main page in almost every scan. Multi-page fax TIFFs convert their first full-size page.
Uncompressed, LZW, Deflate/ZIP, PackBits, JPEG-in-TIFF and CCITT fax (Group 3 and 4) are all decoded, covering scanners, fax software and photo exports.
Many document portals, e-filing systems and employers ask for PDF. Wrapping the scan in a PDF page keeps it looking like a document while still being much smaller than the TIFF.
No. JPG, PNG and screen canvases work in 8 bits per channel, so high-bit-depth TIFFs are reduced to 8-bit. For archival editing workflows, keep the original TIFF.
Only Safari displays TIFF natively. Other browsers never added support, which is why a decoder is loaded here.
- 1
Add TIFF files
Drop .tif or .tiff files from a scanner, camera or archive.
- 2
Pick an output
JPG for small shareable files, PNG for a lossless copy, PDF for a document page.
- 3
Resize large scans
Scans at 600 DPI are often 5000+ pixels wide; set a width to bring them to a practical size.
- 4
Convert and download
The TIFF decoder loads when needed, then each file converts locally.
- ·For text scans, PNG or a high-quality JPG keeps letters sharper than low-quality JPG
- ·Resize 600 DPI scans to around 2000 px wide for on-screen reading
- ·Keep the TIFF originals if they are your archive copy
