When to use this
  • Sharing voice recordings, podcasts or rehearsal takes that are too large as WAV
  • Uploading audio to platforms or email with size limits
  • Converting studio bounces into MP3 previews for clients
  • Freeing space on a phone or recorder full of WAV files

Free and private. Everything runs on your own device, with no account and no uploads.

WAV stores audio uncompressed, about 10 MB for every minute of CD-quality stereo, which is ideal while recording and editing but unwieldy for sharing. MP3 reduces that to roughly 1.4 MB per minute at 192 kbps with no difference most people can hear. This converter takes WAV (and FLAC, OGG or Opus) and encodes it with LAME, the same encoder used by most audio software, at the bitrate you pick.

At 192 kbps an MP3 is about one seventh the size of a CD-quality WAV; at 128 kbps about one eleventh. A 50 MB WAV becomes roughly 7 MB or 4.5 MB.

At 192 kbps and above, almost nobody can reliably tell MP3 from the WAV on normal equipment. Artefacts start becoming audible at 128 kbps on complex music, but speech sounds fine there.

They are resampled to the sample rate you choose (44.1 kHz by default) and encoded as MP3, which has no bit depth of its own. Keep the original WAV as your master.

No tags are written. The MP3 contains audio only; add title and artist in your music player or tag editor afterwards.

Yes. Drop every track at once and download them as one ZIP.

How it works
  1. 1

    Add WAV files

Drop WAV recordings; FLAC, OGG and Opus files are accepted too.

  2. 2

    Choose a bitrate

320 kbps for masters of music, 192 kbps general purpose, 128 kbps for speech.

  3. 3

    Decide on channels

Keep stereo for music. Switch to mono for voice recordings to halve the size.

  4. 4

    Convert and download

Each WAV becomes an MP3; batches are zipped.

Pro tips
  • ·Always keep the WAV if it is a master: MP3 cannot be converted back to the original quality
  • ·For podcasts, mono 128 kbps at 44.1 kHz is the widely used standard
  • ·Normalise or edit before converting, so you only encode once
